Gumtala (Amritsar)
From Pind Mera
One of the ordinary villages in the northern suburbs of Amritsar, Gumtala ( from the Punjabi ‘gumt’meaning a dome) was the site of a huge bell which was used to announce the hour for the benefit of distant dwellers because very few people possessed a watch those days. Now the forces of modernization and urbanization have driven most residents to far off climes in search of greener pastures and it is matter of pride for Amritsar that most Gumtalaites have fared exceptionally well, be it in industry, education or simply petrodollars. Gumtala village as such has coalesced with the peripheral development which has outstripped all limits and reached beyond Rajasansi Airport . The boundary line is hard to locate though there is still some precious heritage left untouched by development.
This village used to bear the burnt of annual floods from the excessive outflow of Ravi or the Sakki Naala or simply heavy rains and senior octogenarians still remember the stories of boats used to rescue the stranded population. We invite all to share their memories. The village still has a Persian wheel which used to run on animal power. It is called ˜Bhoondaanwala Khooh(the wasp-infested well).
